How to Get Machu Picchu Tickets Without Advance Booking: A Last-Minute Guide
If you didn’t secure your tickets to Machu Picchu in advance, don’t worry! You can still get one of the 1000 next-day tickets released daily by the Ministry of Culture in Aguas Calientes. Here’s a complete guide based on our experience, with helpful tips for securing your spot to visit Machu Picchu.
Securing One of the 1000 Next-Day Tickets in Aguas Calientes
Every day, the Ministry of Culture releases 1000 tickets for the next day at its office in Aguas Calientes. These tickets are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier you line up, the better your chances of getting a ticket for your preferred circuit and time slot.
The Ministry opens at 6 a.m., but at that time, they only give you a queue number and a designated time to return later in the day to purchase your ticket. We arrived at 4:30 a.m. and were already behind 280 people, receiving ticket number 281. However, we were still able to secure Circuit 2 for a 6 a.m. entry the next day.
People who arrive later in the morning may still get tickets, but with fewer options, especially for popular circuits like Circuit 2, which offers the iconic Machu Picchu views. Some travelers reportedly line up as early as 3 a.m. to secure their preferred circuits.
The Ministry of Culture’s office in Aguas Calientes, where last-minute Machu Picchu tickets are distributed, is located right next to the Iglesia Virgen Del Carmen, a prominent church in the town. This makes it easy to find, as the church is a well-known landmark in the central area of Aguas Calientes.
No Cash Needed in the Morning, But Have Cash Ready Later
When you line up in the morning, there’s no need to bring cash right away. You only need to show your passport and receive your queue number. However, when you return later in the day at your designated hour to buy your ticket, it’s best to have cash ready, as the credit card machines can be unreliable.
We paid 160 PEN for Circuit 2 with a 6 a.m. entry, a popular choice for its scenic views and proximity to the most famous parts of Machu Picchu.
Timing is Key for Last-Minute Tickets
The earlier you line up, the better your chances are of securing your preferred circuit and time slot. If you’re hoping to get Circuit 2, you should aim to arrive around 3-4 a.m. Later arrivals can still get tickets, but options might be limited.
What to Bring While Waiting
Standing in line for several hours can be challenging, so be prepared:
• Warm clothes for the chilly morning air.
• Snacks and water for the wait.
• Your passport and cash for when you return to purchase your ticket.
Circuit 2 Ticket Prices and Entry Times
We paid 160 PEN for our Circuit 2 ticket with a 6 a.m. entry( As of October 15 2024). Circuit 2 is one of the most popular routes at Machu Picchu, offering breathtaking views of the ancient ruins.
